Pillows are the cheapest design upgrade in a house, and the easiest to get slightly wrong. A sofa with five matching pillows lined up like soldiers looks like a showroom. A sofa with eight mismatched ones looks like a closet exploded. A few simple rules land you in between without hiring anyone.

Here is how we style pillows, using wool pieces from the shop as examples.

Start with the 2-2-1 rule

The 2-2-1 rule is a common designer shorthand for a sofa: two large pillows, two medium ones and one small accent. The large pair goes at the ends, the medium pair sits in front of them, and the accent goes in the middle or to one side as the piece the eye lands on. You get five pillows in a range of sizes, so nothing looks lined up.

Here is one version. The two large pillows are 20 by 20, such as the hooked Brown Abstract Botanical at $89.95 and the embroidered Retro Daisy at $109.95. The two medium are 18 by 18, such as the needlepoint Pink Peonies at $179.95 and the hooked Colored Circles at $79.95. The accent is a 12 by 20 lumbar like the hooked Chinoiserie Cat at $74.99. That set comes to about $535 and uses all three crafts. You do not have to buy it at once. Start with the accent.

It is a starting point, not a law. A loveseat takes three and a sectional can take seven. What matters is a mix of sizes with one clear focal pillow.

Pull your colors from the room

Look at the rug, the art and the curtains, and pick two colors that already appear. Those two go on most of the pillows. A third, bolder color goes on just one, the accent. It is the same idea as the 60-30-10 guideline designers use for whole rooms: most of the space in a base color, some in a second, and a small amount in a bold one. The accent pillow is your 10 percent.

If the sofa is a strong color, go quieter than you think. If it is neutral, you have room to be bold, and one saturated pillow does more than five medium ones.

Mix patterns by changing the scale

A floral can sit next to a geometric as long as the scale is different. Pair one large-scale pattern with one small-scale pattern and one solid, and the eye reads variety instead of noise. Two big florals will fight. A big floral next to a tight geometric will not.

Craft works the same way. Needlepoint is smooth and precise, hooked is raised and soft, and embroidered sits flatter on the fabric. One of each on the same sofa gives the room texture without adding a single color. The craft comparison has side-by-side detail if you want a refresher.

Style by room

Sofa

Use the 2-2-1 setup above and keep a clear seat for a person. If you cannot sit down without moving pillows, remove one.

Bed

Sleeping pillows or shams go at the back. In front, put two 20 by 20 decorative pillows with one lumbar between them. Our largest squares are 20 by 20, which suits a bed well.

Accent chair or reading nook

One pillow is enough. A lumbar like the Chinoiserie Cat supports the lower back, and a 12 by 12 such as the Classic Brown Yorkie at $79.95 suits a smaller chair. Two on one chair is a crowd.

Style by look

Grandmillennial

Layer florals and chinoiserie, and let the needlepoint do the heavy lifting. The Pink Peonies and the White Magnolia are the classic choices, and the floral and chinoiserie collections have more.

Modern farmhouse or cottage

Animal portraits and hooked texture, with plain linen in between. We went through this in detail in the farmhouse styling guide.

Bohemian

Lean on color and pattern, and let the Retro Daisy lead. Keep one solid in the mix so the eye has somewhere to rest.

Contemporary

Fewer pillows and a stronger graphic. The hooked Green Geometric Circles at $79.95 works with two solids and nothing else.

Five common mistakes

  1. Everything matches. A matched set looks bought in one trip, so vary the pattern and the scale.
  2. Everything is the same size. Same-size pillows line up like a row of boxes. Use at least two sizes and add a lumbar if you can.
  3. Too many pillows. Past six on a three-seat sofa, nobody can sit on it.
  4. No texture. A sofa of flat printed pillows looks flat. Add one hooked piece so the surface catches light.
  5. Buying the whole set at once. Rooms that look collected were built over a few years, so start with the accent and add from there.

Keeping them looking good

Fluff down inserts every few days and rotate pillows if one sits in more sun than the rest. Wool needlepoint and hooked pillows are not machine washable, so vacuum them with an upholstery attachment and blot spills fast. Quick answers

How many throw pillows should go on a sofa? Five is a good default for a three-seat sofa, in a mix of sizes. A loveseat takes two or three, and a sectional can take up to seven.

What is the 2-2-1 pillow rule? Two large pillows at the ends, two medium in front, and one small accent in the middle. It gives you a range of sizes and a clear focal point.

How do you mix patterns on pillows? Change the scale. Pair one large pattern with one small pattern and one solid, and keep two of the colors consistent across all of them.
